Fastest Production Cars as of 2020 ( as per Nurburgring Lap Times )

The Green Hell

The Nurburgring or " The Green Hell " as Sir Jackie Steward called it after winning the 1968 German Grand Prix is the longest and the most extreme race track to ever exist. With a combined length of 25.378 km or 15.770 mi and containing 170 turns, it is the most brutal and most demanding race-track ever as well as one of the most lethal.

The Green Hell

Originally, the track featured four configurations :

  • 28.265 km or 17.563 mi long Gesamtstecke ( whole course )
  • 22.810 km or 14.173 mi long Nordschleife  ( north loop )
  • 7.747 km or 4.814 mi long Sudschleife ( south loop )
  • 2.281 km or 1.471 mi long Zielschleife ( warm-up/finish loop )
In this blog, we will take into consideration the modern-day lap times of the Nordschleife and rank the cars according to the time they took to complete the present course of Nordschleife which is an astounding 20.81 km or 15.770 mi long and contains 154 turns.

With such an extremely technical track with an equally difficult learning curve, just doing one lap of the Nordschleife is an achievement in itself but some cars set lap times around the track that just seems to be impossible and also for decades, car manufactures have been using the Nordschleife to test and develop their up and coming cars and prototypes because the north loop offers all the driving conditions required for the proper development of a sports/performance car. The manufacturers often advertise the lap times they achieved on the Nordschleife to further demonstrate their car's potential.

The lap times of the Nordschleife is an important factor in the overall performance sheet of the car as it showcases just how well behaved the car is and also how brutally fast it can be.

So, without further due, here is the list of the fastest production cars as of 2020 as per their Nurburgring Nordschleife lap times :

Also, in addition to the lap records, the Viper ACR also holds the record for the most amount of downforce produced by any production car, an astounding 907 kg of downforce. For example, the Mclaren Senna produces a max downforce of 800 kg.

On September 1st, 2017 the Dodge Viper ACR clocked the Nordschleife in 7:01:3, making it the fastest American rear-wheel-drive car with manual transmission to lap the green hell.

When it comes to race tracks and racing in general, no other company in the world is more recognized and adored as the iconic prancing horse from Maranello, Ferrari. Since "Pista" means track in Italian, the 488 GTB Pista is an exceptional track-focused Ferrari that also happens to be street legal.

The Pista is powered by a 3.9 L twin-turbocharged V8 that, at the time of its launch was the most powerful Ferrari V8 engine producing over 710 hp and 770 N-m of torque, which combined with its featherlight body and a lighting fast dual-clutch transmission, catapults it from 0-100 kmph in 2.85 seconds and maxes out at 339.5 kmph or 211 mph.

The track-oriented version of the Lamborghini Huracan, the LP640-4 Performante is a very mean bull that rips through tarmac and makes the already angry-looking Huracan look like a frowning baby.

This bull is powered by a 5.2 L naturally aspirated V10 that makes 631 hp and 601 N-m of torque, apart from its mesmerizing melody. The Performante underwent massive exterior and interior changes with the extensive use of carbon fiber as well as it got an adjustable carbon rear wing. This made the Performante weigh 40 kg less than the standard Huracan and this weight saving helped it achieve a 0-100 kmph time of 2.9 seconds. The top speed is still the same as that of the standard Huracan, at 325 kmph or 202 mph.

The Performante also utilizes Lamborghini's new ALA ( Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva ) system, a very clever active aero system that is almost 80% lighter than the conventional hydraulic system.

These massive aero improvements coupled with the extensive weight reduction measures and a huge bump in downforce enabled the Performante to lap around the Nordschleife in a staggering 6:52:01 on the 5th of October, 2018.

The Radical SR8 LM is a more powerful version of the 2005's record-breaking SR8. Like it's predecessor, it is also a barely street-legal sports car and it set a lap record around the Nordschleife on 19th August 2009, when it lapped the green hell in 6:48:28, a record that stood for 12 years and was eventually beaten by a Porsche 911 GT2 RS ( 991.2 ) on 20th September 2017.

The most brutal 911 ever as well as the fastest Porsche on this list, the 911 GT2 RS is an eye-popping ear exploding piece of fabulous German engineering. The 911 is the standard by which all the other sports cars are measured and the 911 GT2 RS is the standard by which all the track-focused street-legal cars are measured. It is the most powerful 911 ever as well as being the fastest 911 as well.

This Frankenstein of a car is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.8 L inline 6 that cranks out 700 hp and 750 N-m of torque, all of which are sent to the rear wheels only. The GT2 RS accelerates from 0-100 kmph in 2.7 seconds! ( that's hypercar/supercar territory ) and tops out at an electronically limited top speed of 339.5 kmph or 211 mph and if the limiter is removed, it will do 358.8 kmph or 223 mph. The limiter only exists so prevent the car from ripping its tires, otherwise, Porsche would have to develop an entirely new tire compound!
