Best C-Segment Sedans To Buy Under 20 Lakhs INR | Ride In Style |

Sedans need no introduction, not only they accommodate more than enough people in one place and are luxurious, but they have a certain flair on the road that simply cannot be matched by any other type of vehicle. With the current rise of the SUV and Crossover craze, all the other segments of cars have seen a substantial decline in demand, even the once-dominant segment of sedans and this had lead to phasing out of once-popular models, which in turn lead to fewer buying options.

But even after this, there still exists a fan-base for sedans and car makers still continue to make sedans, albeit the sedans now face very fierce competition with the SUV market. Me, well being a sedan guy, will choose a proper sedan over any cross-over or SUV any day, so without any further ado and any particular order, here is the list of the best C- segment sedans that you can buy under 20 lakhs INR that you can buy right now:

Honda City ( 5th and 4th Generation )

The Honda City is not only the car that launched Honda in India way back in 1998 but also has remained the top performer and the benchmark for comparing the other manufacturer's models.

Having arguably the most powerful as well as the best engine in its class, the 1.5 L  naturally-aspirated i-VTEC engine that makes 120 hp and 145 N-m of torque, the engine is not only buttery-smooth to drive normally but get a little enthusiastic and the engine loves to rev and when the " VTEC " kicks in, the engine just gets a new breath, delivering peak power and smiles.

But the City is not only a driver's or enthusiast's car, but it is also a proper C-segment sedan with tons of goodies, luxurious cabin, superb reliability, and Honda's brilliant built quality. Also, the CVT version of the City gets paddle shifters, adding more to the driving pleasure. While being a true driver's car, the City is also fuel-efficient, the petrol City returns an ARAI rated mileage of 17.8 kmpl while the diesel City has a mileage of 24.1 kmpl.

The 4th generation Honda city is only available in the 1.5 L i-VTEC petrol engine but the 5th generation City is available in both the 1.5 L i-VTEC petrol and the 1.5 L i-DTEC diesel engine.

The only downside of the City is its price tag, which although can be more than justified for the driving pleasure, but for the regular buyer who wants a sedan, the City can be a bit steep on the budget. Honda currently sells both the 4th generation City and the 5th generation City side by side.

The 4th generation price range is:  11.28 - 16.47 Lakhs ( on-road, Ghaziabad )

The 5th generation price range is:  12.69 - 16.97 Lakhs ( on-road, Ghaziabad )

Hyundai Verna

The Hyundai Verna is another popular car in the C-segment from the Korean auto giant Hyundai. The Verna was launched way back in 2006 and ever since has been the popular choice among buyers for its good value for money persona, decent performance, and being a Hyundai, loaded with features.

2020 Hyundai Verna is no exception, it is loaded to the brim with gizmos and features and has a superb build quality and provides a pretty good value for money. The Verna has three powertrains,

  1. A 1.5 L VTVT petrol engine delivering 115 hp and 144 N-m of torque
  2. A 1.5 L CRDi diesel engine delivering 115 hp and 250 N-m of torque
  3. A 1.0 L Kappa Turbo GDi petrol engine delivering 120 hp and 172 N-m of torque
The all-new 1.0 L turbo-petrol is a surprising new addition to the Verna and is directly pitched towards the enthusiasts and the icing on the cake is that the Verna Turbo gets a 7-speed DCT with paddle shifters, taking the driving pleasure to a whole new level.

The petrol range of the Verna is: ₹ 10.52 - 15.97 Lakhs ( on-road, Ghaziabad )

The diesel range of the Verna is: ₹ 10.52 - 17.39 Lakhs ( on-road, Ghaziabad )

The turbo-petrol model of the Verna is: ₹ 16.13 Lakhs ( on-road, Ghaziabad )

With an ARAI rated petrol efficiency of 17.7 kmpl and 25 kmpl for the diesel, the Hyundai Verna is also a very efficient car. The only downside to the Verna is the lacklustre rear seat spacing, which is very low compared to the competition.

Skoda Rapid TSI

The Skoda Rapid TSI is not only the cheapest sedan in this segment, but it's performance and built quality rivals to that of the segment benchmark, the Honda City, which not only makes the Skoda Rapid TSI a pretty serious competitor in this already competitive segment but makes the Rapid TSI an overall great package.

Powering the Rapid is the International Engine of the Year award winner, the 1.0 L 3-cylinder TSI turbocharged petrol engine that makes a healthy 110 hp and 175 N-m of torque. This new engine from Volkswagon is so good, that it launches the Rapid TSI from 0-100 kmph in just 9.97 seconds, making it dangerously close to the segment benchmark, the Honda City's acceleration time. The TSI engine is also very rev-happy, making it a driver's delight.

Starting at just ₹ 8.49 Lakhs, the Skoda Rapid TSI not only undercuts the entire competition, but also some hatchbacks and compact sedans. Add to that an exceptional and tough build quality, a solid performing engine, brilliant chassis dynamics, good efficiency and decent feature list makes the Rapid TSI an absolute bargain. The Skoda Rapid TSI is only offered in the 1.0 L TSI petrol version and gets an ARAI rated fuel efficiency of 18.97 kmpl.

The price range of the Rapid TSI is: ₹ 8.49 - 13.66 Lakhs ( on-road, Ghaziabad )

The only downside to the Skoda Rapid TSI that although it has all the necessary features for making your drive comfortable, it still lacks some fancy gizmos and features like LED headlamps, sunroof etc. and some ergonomic issues, but they are nowhere a dealbreaker because it is the best value for money car in this entire segment. Period!!!

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz

The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is the Indian automobile juggernaut, Maruti Suzuki's take on the C-segment sedans. While the rest of the competition has some sort of sporty edge to their ride and engines, the Ciaz is different, the Ciaz is the least powerful car in its class but it is one of the most comfortable ones. The Ciaz's engine delivers power delivery is quite flat and the suspension is tuned more towards comfort, which suits the car's personality as it is a big sedan and acceleration or top speed usually doesn't matter to the buyers of this segment. With the SHVS or Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki system, the Ciaz is also the most fuel-efficient petrol car in its segment with an ARAI rated mileage of 20.65 kmpl.

Loaded with the latest techs, some segment-first, a gorgeous exterior, having a very luxurious and well-built interior, a very comfortable ride quality, and being a Maruti, so cheap to run and being and overall great value for money car makes the Ciaz a very compelling package.

The Ciaz is also available in an " S " version, although mechanically it is the same as the regular Ciaz, the Ciaz S gets cosmetic upgrades to make it look a tad-sportier than the vanilla Ciaz like blacked-out alloy wheels, piano-black finish on the front grille and bumper, black cladding along the sides and back of the car and a black spoiler.

The price range of the Ciaz is: ₹ 9.34 - 12.74 Lakhs ( on-road, Ghaziabad )

The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz does everything brilliantly what you would expect from a sedan of this category but a more powerful engine would have made the already amazing car even better.

Volkswagon Vento TSI

The Volkswagon Vento TSI is the only German car in this category, which means it comes with exceptional built quality, unbeatable body dynamics, exhilarating driving experience and a very comfortable ride.

The Vento makes 110 hp and 175 N-m of torque, making it a quick sedan and with a17.69 kmpl ARAI rated mileage, the Vento is efficient too and since the Vento is based off the Polo, it inherits the Polo's driving dynamics, which makes it one of the most well behaved as well as one of the best driving cars in this category and also because is it based on the Polo, the Vento also has the same timeless clean design that the Indian buyers just love.

Toyota Yaris

The Toyota Yaris is Toyota's answer to the C-segment sedans and with Yaris, Toyota comes with full guns blazing into this extremely competitive segment. The Toyota Yaris is essentially a baby Corolla, it looks like a Corolla on the outside and the inside and just like the Corolla, it offers bullet-proof reliability, long feature list and peace of mind to the buyer.

The Toyota Yaris is powered by a 1.5 L naturally-aspirated VVT-i petrol engine that produces 107 hp and 140 N-m of torque. Power delivery is very linear, making the Yaris a very relaxed and easy car to drive. The ARAI rated fuel efficiency cis 17.19 kmpl, making the Yaris easier on the pockets too and since it is a Toyota, the Yaris comes with Toyota's legendary bullet-proof reliability, which is one of the very important things buyers have in mind while purchasing a new car.

On the mechanical front, the Yaris is a total winner but when it comes to features, the Yaris surprises even more. The Toyota Yaris comes with segment-first HSEA ( IR cut ) Acoustic and Vibration control glass and what it does is that it blocks out the noises coming from the outside, making the cabin quiet and comfortable. The Yaris also has gesture control for the infotainment system and 60:40 rear split seats to carry additional load, both the features which also are segment first. The Yaris also comes with a tyre pressure monitoring system, another helpful feature in today's day and age.

The price range of the Yaris is: ₹ 10.05 - 16.5 Lakhs ( on-road, Ghaziabad )

If a comfortable sedan that not only wraps you around in luxury but is effortless to drive, has bullet-proof reliability, comes jam-packed with features some segment-first and is easy on the pocket to buy and run is what you desire, then the Toyota Yaris is the pick for you. The only downside in my opinion to the Yaris is the way that it looks, but looks are a personal opinion and everyone has a different taste and other than that, the Yaris is an amazing vehicle.
