The Holy Trinity of Automobiles | The Greatest Automobiles of the Modern Age |

There are normal cars like sedans, hatchbacks, then there are sports cars like the Porsche 911 or the Toyota Supra, above them are supercars like the Lamborghini Aventador or the Ferrari SF90 Stradale and even above them are hypercars like Koenigsegg Agera RS or the Bugatti Chiron.

The cars that we will talk about in this article are in a league of their own and have achieved such a divine stature in the car community that these three vehicles are collectively called the Holy Trinity. The members are :

These cars are essentially hybrid supercars, that is they have the conventional internal combustion engine and in addition to that, they also have an electric power-train. So, basically, they have two engines.

McLaren P1

The McLaren P1

The most brutal supercar ever, the wildest of the holy trinity as well as the best driver's car in the world, the McLaren P1 is a 905hp hybrid monstrosity that has changed the supercar rulebook forever ever since it's debut back in 2013.

Powered by a 3.8 L twin-turbocharged V8 that produces 727hp and an electric motor of 177hp, the combined power output of the P1 is a staggering 905hp. All this power is enough for a 0-100 kmph time of just 2.8 seconds and a flat-out top speed ( electronically limited ) top speed of 350 kmph or 217 mph. Theoretically, the P1 could achieve an astounding top speed of 400 kmph or 249 mph.

With a price tag of $1.15 million and a production run of just 375 units, the McLaren P1 is one of the most exclusive automobiles to ever exist. Although not the actual successor of the legendary McLaren F1 which the new McLaren Speedtail is, the McLaren P1 is undoubtedly the spiritual successor of the McLaren F1 as at the time of its launch, it was not only the ultimate McLaren but also the ultimate supercar and still to this date, even after 7 years since it's debut, it continues to remain one of the most technologically advanced piece of engineering.

Porsche 918 Spyder

The Porsche 918 Spyder

The gentleman's supercar, the most mature of the holy trinity of supercars, as well as the pinnacle of German engineering, the Porsche 918 Spyder is Germany's answer to Britain's McLaren P1 and Italy's Ferrari Laferrari. The Porsche 918 Spyder is the only car among the trio which has all-wheel-drive as well as four-wheel steering and combining it with Porsche's unbeatable dynamics, the Porsche 918 Spyder is an extremely precise car.

The Porsche 918 Spyder

Powered by a naturally-aspirated 4.6 L V8 producing 599 hp and having two electric motors delivering an additional 282 hp, the combined power output of the Porsche 918 Spyder is a staggering 875 hp and 1,280 N-m of torque. The Porsche 918 Spyder is the only car among the holy trinity that has two electric motors instead of one. Combine it with an all-wheel-drive system and the Porsche 918 Spyder becomes the fastest accelerating production car on the planet, with a 0-100 kmph time of just 2.6 seconds ( Official Porsche Time )

Although, individual test results have varied results, as some tests had a 2.5 seconds 0-100 kmph and in the Car and Driver's magazine independent test, they managed a 2.2 second 0-100 kmph time, which just highlights the 918 Spyder's capabilities. ( Source: Wikipedia ).

Being the least powerful as well as the heaviest of the trio, weighing in at 1,634 kg the top speed of the Porsche 918 Spyder takes a hit and the car maxes out 345 kmph or 214 mph.

The Porsche 918 Spyder

The Porsche 918 Spyder is called a gentleman's supercar because it is neither too extreme like the McLaren P1 nor it is as seductive as the Ferrari LaFerrari, it has a more mature appeal than the two.

Being the spiritual successor to the iconic Porsche Carrera GT, the Porsche 918 Spyder had a lot to live up to and by smashing the Nurburgring Nordschleife lap time in under 7-minutes, taking a time of 6:57, it became the first series-production street-legal car in the world to achieve such a feat, thereby cementing its legacy.
With an asking price of $845,000, it is also the cheapest among the holy trinity.

Ferrari LaFerrari

The Ferrari LaFerrari

The most powerful car amongst the trio as well as the lightest, the only car that has an F1 inspired KERS system and arguably the most seductive and stylish among the trio, the Ferrari Laferrari is not as savage or brutal as the McLaren P1, neither it is a gentleman's supercar as the Porsche 918 Spyder, it's a bit of both actually.

The Ferrari LaFerrari

For generations, the go-to symbol for speed and prestige has been the iconic prancing horse from Maranello, Italy the home of Ferrari. The Ferrari LaFerrari is their greatest and the most ambitious project which is a very bold statement, considering the long list of legendary and iconic vehicles Ferrari has produced.

The heart of the LaFerrari is a proper exotic engine, a naturally-aspirated 6.3 L V12 that produces 789 hp and 700 N-m of torque. The engine is coupled with an F1 derived KERS system that provides short bursts of extra power. The V12 and the KERS system, together make the Ferrari LaFerrari, the most powerful car among the supercar holy trinity, with a power output of 950 hp and 900 N-m of torque. Combine this insane power with an extremely light body ( lightest among the trio ) and the Ferrari LaFerrari becomes the fastest car among the trinity as well as the fastest Ferrari at the time of it's launch, reaching a top speed of 372 kmph or 231 mph.

The Ferrari LaFerrari is also one of the fastest accelerating cars of all time, with a 0-100 kmph time of 2.4 seconds. When comparing manufacturer's time, the Ferrari LaFerrari beats the Porsche 918 Spyder, but considering the independent test results, the Porsche 918 Spyder is still the fastest accelerating production car on the planet, with a time of 2.2 seconds.

The Ferrari LaFerrari

Considered to be one of the most beautiful cars on the planet and quite frankly the best looking car among the holy trinity, the Ferrari LaFerrari is one of the best-performing cars of all time, acing in every department. Although it is a hybrid, it cannot be driven on electric power alone as the McLaren P1 and the Porsche 918 Spyder, because the V12 engine and the electric motor of the KERS system are coupled with each other all the time.

Ferrari LaFerrari is the next chapter in the ultimate Ferrari lineup, carrying forward the legacy of the Ferrari Enzo, as well the last mid-engine V12 powered Ferrari.

With a jaw-dropping price tag of $1.41 million, it is also one of the most expensive Ferrari's ever. Only 499 of these beauties have ever been produced.

Final Verdict

Each of these cars is the respective manufacturer's halo car, their ultimate machine as well the next step in their ultimate car lineup. These three cars, McLaren P1, Porsche 918 Spyder and the Ferrari LaFerrari have rewritten the rulebook of making a car go fast while producing fewer emissions too, as a matter of fact, these three cars produce less CO2 than a normal family sedan while producing more than 800 hp and going over 320 kmph or 200 mph.

Each of the cars among the holy trinity also represents the place of their origin, the McLaren P1 is from Britain and it has some of the most physics bending engineering applied to it, the Porsche 918 Spyder is from Germany and has bulletproof precision and dynamics, the Ferrari LaFerrari is from Italy, and has more power and a body that can only be described as a piece of automotive art.
