Porsche 918 Spyder | Fastest Accelerating car of all time |

Overview

"One of the most technologically advanced vehicles to ever exist, the fastest accelerating production car of all time, a successor to one of the greatest Porsche of all time, the gentleman's supercar, etc....."

The above lines are just some of the ways the most well-behaved members of the Holy Trinity of Automobiles, the Porsche 918 Spyder.

The 918 Spyder, just like the other members of the holy trinity, i.e, The McLaren P1 and the Ferrari LaFerrari is a hybrid supercar. In fact, it is the only car among the trio that boasts two electric motors instead of one, as well as all-wheel-drive and four-wheel steering as both the McLaren P1 and the Ferrari LaFerrari, have one electric motor each and both of them are rear-wheel-drive.

Specifications

The Porsche 918 Spyder has two engines, one being a 4.6 L naturally-aspirated V8 that is capable of producing peak power of 599 hp at 8,700 rpm and a peak torque of 540 N-m at 6,700 rpm, the other being the two electric motors that deliver an additional power of 210 kW or 282 hp.

The joint task force of the engine and the electric motors produce a combined power of 874 hp and 1,280 N-m of torque and since it is an all-wheel-drive vehicle, the Porsche 918 Spyder launches very hard and very very fast off the line, how fast you ask,  well the Porsche 918 Spyder is currently the fastest accelerating production car of all time, taking a mere 2.2 seconds to reach 100 kmph from nothing!

The official Porsche time for 0-100 kmph acceleration is 2.6 seconds, but independent test runs have far surpassed the official Porsche time and the Car and Driver magazine's test run yielded a 2.2 second 0-100 kmph time, which made it the fastest accelerating production car of all time.

Since it is one of the most feature-rich car in the trio as well the only one having all-wheel-drive and four-wheel steering, the Porsche 918 Spyder is the heaviest among the trio with a curb weight of 1,634 Kg. Because of that, the top speed of the Porsche 918 Spyder takes a hit and it has the least top speed among the trio, topping out at 345 kmph or  214 mph.

  • Top speed: 345 kmph or 214 mph
  • Acceleration ( 0-100 kmph ): 2.6 seconds
  • Acceleration ( 0-200 kmph ): 7.2 seconds
  • Acceleration ( 0-300 kmph ): 19.9 seconds

The Porsche 918 Spyder, just like the McLaren P1 can be driven on electric power alone, albeit the range is only 29 km or 18 mi.

Legacy

Being the successor to one of the greatest Porsche supercars, the Carrera GT is no easy feat, but the Porsche 918 Spyder is such a brilliant car that it not only carries forward the legacy of Carrera GT but establishes itself as one of the most technologically advanced to ever exist in the world. The 918 Spyder also became the halo car of Porsche, just like the Carrera GT, a symbol that represents the capabilities and design and engineering prowess of Porsche. Priced at $845,000 it is the cheapest car among the trio

Adding to its resume, the Porsche 918 Spyder also became the world's first production street-legal car to break the 7-minute barrier on the Nurburgring Nordschleife, setting a lap time of 6:57.

Being capable of going well past 300 kmph while still producing low CO2 emissions than a Toyota Prius and becoming the first production street-legal car in the world to break the 7-minute barrier around the Nurburgring Nordschleife on top of being one of the most technologically advanced vehicles, the Porsche 918 Spyder is the perfect example of what Germany is famous for, " Precision Engineering ".
